Organic Linkbuilding

Organic Link Building for Ranking

Search engines like Google and Bing crawl the web, following links like streets between pages and sites. These links help search engines both find and index pages, as well as categorize them based on topical relevance and popularity to determine where and when your pages should rank in their search engines.

Dating back to the 1990’s, search engines have used “links” as a way to measure votes of importance and popularity for pages. This voting system, along with hundreds of other “ranking signals” make up Google’s algorithm.

While links are not the end all be all when it comes to ranking, they certainly play a major role. The role links play in helping sites to rank well in search results has prompted many to build, buy or otherwise obtain links through “unnatural” means…..which, by definition, is against Google’s terms and can result in a site penalty or even de-indexing.

But if links are so important, and you can’t just go out and build/buy them, what is a business to do? Enter: Natural or Organic Link Building.

But first, what is a “Natural” or “Organic” Link?

Organic links refer to those links that are incorporated on pages or within content WITHOUT the direct intention of influencing a search engine’s algorithm (i.e. Google). Such natural or organic links are also “unsolicited”, meaning no person or entity asked to have them placed.

Other terminology used for “organic links”:

  • Natural links
  • Google friendly links
  • Whitehat links
  • Google compliant links

Organic Link Building –Earning your links

Link building is one of the most effective ways to enhance SEO and drive organic rankings. Yet, going about link building the “wrong” way can accomplish the exact opposite, earning you a PENALTY (or worse) on Google.

Enter, “link earning”, the organic way to naturally acquire links in a way that is Google friendly.

Organic Link Building 101:

Be Original and Creative

Seems like a no-brainer right? But all too often businesses don’t take the time to come up with unique and creative angles to topics that have already been beat to death online.

For example, type in “organic link building” and you’ll find over 100k exact match pages and over 11.4 million pages without using “quotes” around the keywords.

No one wants to link to the same old stuff they’ve been reading about for the last few years. So the question becomes, how do you stand out amongst the sea of similar content already out there?

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Take a controversial angle
  • Think outside the box and use a unique approach
  • Keep an eye on industry news for new developments and trending topics

Get Social

Go where your customers are and get active. By now you should have a good idea of what your ideal customer or visitor looks like, their likes and dislikes, and where they hang out both online and off.

Spend time in groups, forums and online communities where your target demographic hangs out. Engage with them, offer helpful advice and information and don’t be spammy.

Not only will you earn relative links over time, you’ll grow your direct audience and network, which can result in direct sales in and of itself.

Sharing is Caring

You know what some of the best ranking pages and linked to articles consist of? Pages that solve a problem or help educate on a process or method.

Examples:

  • How to articles
  • Tutorials
  • Guides
